TALK TO YOUR CHILD

You may be wary of talking to children about the seriousness of the choking game. After all, what if our children haven’t ever heard of the game and you’re the one who introduces the concept? As a D.A.R.E. officer put it,

Would you rather have the kids get the adult version of the details or the playground version?”

We encourage you to share this valuable information with your kids, especially those between the ages of 7 and 18. Talk to your child about the choking game in the same way that you would talk to them about drug or alcohol concerns.

PLAYGROUND VERSION

REALITY

You’ll get a warm and fuzzy feeling. It’s no big deal. You may feel warm and fuzzy, but this is because thousands of brain cells are dying. Brain cells you will never get back.
Nothing bad ever happens. Not true. You can pass out from the lack of oxygen. Sometimes kids need to be resuscitated.
It’s safer than using drugs. Choking yourself is just as dangerous and just as addictive.
Sometimes you twitch…it’s so funny. The body twitches because the brain is experiencing a seizure. At this point the brain damage taking place can’t be reversed.
It’s safe to do if you have friends with you. It is NEVER safe. Pressure on the nerves can cause an immediate heart attack.

REPORT VIDEOS LIKE THIS ONE

This video, like many others on YouTube, glorifies the Choking Game making light of the dangers involved. Our youngsters are attracted to, and disarmed by, it’s playful design believing it to be harmless. It’s a deception we can no longer live with.

ENCOURAGE PEDIATRICIANS TO INCLUDE INFORMATION IN THEIR ANTICIPATORY GUIDANCE

The choking game is a dangerous activity that is popular among adolescents; however, a lot of physicians caring for adolescents seem to be unaware of the choking game and are unable to identify important warning signs of participation in the activity

How many signs are there?

Of even greater concern only 2% of pediatricians include the Choking Game in anticipatory guidance for adolescents even though 65% agreed that it should be included! Read the “The Choking Game: Physician Perspectives.”

REQUEST IN SCHOOL PROGRAMS

There is currently no requirement that preventative action for asphyxiation activities be taught in Frederick County schools as, e.g. part of their DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) programs. Some schools have, upon discovering the activity, sent notices to parents as warnings, or held workshops (usually after there has been an incident) to provide additional information. This is even though one study found that 90 percent of the parents surveyed believe that information about this activity should be included in school health curricula. Absent a state mandate, it is up to the independent schools and school districts as to whether this information will be provided in our school’s setting. Reach out to our school leaders and make these requests.
